I'm a Kansas City wedding photographer with a deep love for storytelling. I love to work with couples that want a wedding gallery that is an authentic reflection of their love for one another.
Powell Gardens is a beautiful backdrop for a fall wedding, or in Anna and Shawn’s case, a spring wedding that was inspired and designed with fall colors. This botanical garden located just outside of Kansas City has a multitude of opportunities for capturing the beauty of nature in all of its seasons. You’ll find plenty of scenic landscapes and intimate settings. When I asked Anna about her colors for the wedding, she said to me “I’m having a fall wedding in spring.” I think that’s pretty evident in her invitations and bridesmaid dresses! Anna and Shawn’s Powell Gardens wedding was genuinely such a blast to witness. Here’s a glimpse into what makes this gorgeous venue an ideal location for couples who want their wedding to embrace the magic of nature during autumn (or spring… or summer…).
Powell Gardens is a living canvas. During the fall, it becomes an oasis of color, taking on vibrant autumn tones. The meadows and wooded areas create a picturesque setting for outdoor ceremonies. You can plan either a large ceremony or an intimate elopement at Powell Gardens and immerse yourself in the beauty of the fiery reds, oranges and golds that define the season of fall.
Photographer’s tip: be sure to plan enough time before and/or after your ceremony to explore sites of the botanical gardens and take in its beauty! Maybe get some beautiful photos taken, too. 😉
There are several unique locations at Powell Gardens for both your ceremony and your reception. The Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel is an ideal spot, with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow nature to become part of the ceremony’s backdrop. In the chapel, you’ll have the comfort of being protected from the elements, while also feeling like you are completely immersed in the nature around you. It’s a win-win!
If you want to be out in the open air for your wedding, fall is the perfect time of year for this at Powell Gardens. The temperature is usually much more pleasant than summer or winter, making it a comfortable experience for your guests. So you can say “I do” outside, surrounded by all the warm hues of autumn, which create a naturally stunning setting. Consider the Perennial Garden for your outdoor ceremony, where you’ll feel at one with nature. Or the Fountain Garden, which is a perfect spot for sunset ceremonies and for couples that love water (the cascading fountain is stunning!).
The rich, warm colors of fall make beautiful decor elements for any wedding or elopement. Consider Anna and Shawn’s wedding, featured in this blog post. The bridesmaids dresses are varying shades of orange, red, purple, and teal. These same colors are reflected in Anna and her bridesmaid’s bouquets. You can include other elements to bring out the feeling of autumn in your wedding or elopement, too. Some examples include adding dried leaves and grasses to your floral decor, or using lanterns to light the aisle path can really enhance the fall atmosphere. Choosing venues that incorporate wood or stone as part of the structure design or decor adds a certain essence of fall as well.
As a photographer, Powell Gardens in the fall is an absolute dream location. I can use my drone for wide aerial shots to showcase the beauty of your venue location. We can explore the grounds of the botanical gardens, admiring all the varying plants and wildlife, and getting dreamy photos as we go. In the fall, the soft autumn sunlight, the dramatic backdrops of golden trees, and the peaceful atmosphere combine to create unforgettable wedding moments.
Photographer’s tip: the meadows make incredible wide-angle shots, surrounding you with fields of gold. And the water features and fountains make great opportunities to capture the reflection of the fall foliage on the water!
“OMG we’re crying and we’ve only mad it through half of them! 🥹💜😔
“Sara!!!! Shawn and I just got your incredibly generous and wonderful gift box! We are overwhelmed with emotions and so grateful!! Thank you so so so much!ðŸ˜ðŸ’œ”
“We are so in love with our wedding photos and it’s all because of you!”
